A lot of oil money went a long way. Dubai has become a city that has become the envy of the other world's cities. I'm am astounded by these pictures and I hope you enjoy them.

Dubai really is off-da-scales! My new girlfriend goes there to work, she works for air carriers. She has a lot of pics too, and some video, but says these do not give the awesome scale of things and whats going on there.

This is a good example of "development" gone crazy.

"""There are more construction workers in Dubai than there are actual citizens."""

That said, Arab money is at least allowing architects to experiment. Whether any of this is economically supportable without oil windfalls is questionable.

That's almost obscene! That city looks like something out of a sci fi movie.. Amazing what their oil did for them, makes me wonder why our resources aren't showing the same returns.

Dubai is a city and part of the United Arab Emirates. The United States if gargantuan compared to Dubai. Also, our governments are vastly different, and we aren't producing to our full oil potential, unfortunately.

The notorious defense contractor Haliburton moved it's headquarters to Dubai. There's plenty to be had there at the American taxpayer's expense.

American tax dollars are being bled from the treasury making Dubai glitsy. Alot of American "fortune seekers" head over for 6 digit salaries with little skills. It's the perfect "getting rich scheme for the limited individual." The prerequisite is the honor code among thieves- "don't tell and we won't either."

BTW- Halliburton's move was for one reason-they'll be avoiding U.S. taxes.

This is a prime example of where our oil money is going. we spend approximately one half TRILLION dollars a year for foreign oil!

I saw these man-made islands being built in Dubai, while watching The Science Channel. Pretty cool how it was designed and built with the help of an engineering firm from Canada.

Interesting. I see this as an intelligent move. The oil won't last forever and we won't always need it... so what do ya do? Make a tourist destination of massive proportions.

Dubai represents a classic example of oil wealth (money) well spent on infrastructure to improve lives and attract massive tourist influx. It is clean and awesome. It's international airline EMIRATES, has one of the BEST passenger services that no other airline can match. The hospitals are yet to be rivaled by UK & USA.

Indian professionals from IT to Medical have put Dubai in forefront of technology and medicine.

It will be sooner than later that Dubai will beat London & New York as the financial capital of the world.

No. First, like in every other state there are polticians in UAE. Second, the big reason for the huge difference between Dubai and other Arab states (oil-reach or not) is that the rulers of Dubai decided to spend money on development of their own home state instead of trying to destroy other homes and states.

Dubai is a business city that promotes business and the world is investing in Dubai, even Haliburton like crooks, and all kinds of leading companies and American crooks like Chaney are taking advantages of cheaper taxes and business conditions to open up offices there. People in Dubai are very business minded, honest and efficient.

Dubai has done a lot. But not with oil, they actually have very little oil of their own.

But no taxes, cheap imported labor and no politicians are the reasons for their success.

Next time you visit take a close look at the buildings being constructed and the people doing the construction. Most buildings are completed in less than half the time it takes to build in the US. Partly due to no building codes.

Construction costs are very low. 10 dollar a day Indian and Pakistani labour help reduce costs. No unions, no regulations, what could be better.

But I would not want to be in Dubai in 30 years. The buildings will be falling apart and the growth based economy will be over. When people stop pouring money into the area they will realize that Dubai produces nothing and isn't really that nice a place to live. It is only a good place to have your bank account.

What does Monaco produce, in your opinion? Dubai is going to become the Monaco (or Las Vegas if you wish) of the Middle East where millions of people will come to have fun and spend their money.

it is true that they get cheap labours from india, pakistan, sri lanka and all those places, however, they have very qualified engineers in charge (most who are USA or British graduates)and hell they pay them a lot of money (tax FREE) plus living expenses, you would be fool not to go and work there for at least few years(I personally know many people who did just that)

There is no such thing as tax free for an American citizen. And the engineers do not do the labor.

How many OZ's in the desert can make a go of it, for God's sake. Much of these will be empty shells in 20 years, difficult and prohibitive for moderate income folks to reach and so expensive to live in that only billionaires can participate.

I'd take Monaco any day and twice on Sundays.

Do you have any reason to believe that in 20 years (or tomorrow) Dubai will be more expensive than Monaco? I don't.

If you can afford to 'take Monaco any day and twice on Sundays' then you'll probably we able to afford Dubai, too. After all, it's market, competition, supply and demand, etc.

Dubai is a spectacle. As the hordes from Bush's homestate, the socially twisted state of Texas, head over to the trough of money being forked out at taxpayer's expense their only prerequisite is greed and keeping the mouth shut.

You see that's how bussiness is done, pard-ner!

Thinker22, it is kindda hard to figure which side you are on. I never said engineers did labor work nor that I said they are American citizens. I said they're USA, UK and -am adding- Canada graduates. what I meant by TAX FREE is that UAE doesn't collect tax. it is your business if you want to give USA money.. it is your money!!

Man, fantastic! Amazing what addiction to oil can do. And, with prices of oil going up higher, this place will probably soon have it's own flying-saucers to get it's businessmen to work. Anyway, those towers are cool, but, aren't they worried that some crazy Christians will hijack planes, shout, "Jesus is GREAT!" and, well, YOU know?
